Airport and Driving Information

Alert: owing to stricter security, it is important to arrive at even the smaller airports at least one hour before departure, not counting the rental car return time. We have experimental evidence that you will otherwise be facing chances of being kept off the flight. International travel requires even larger lead time: please check with your airline.

SYRACUSE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (SYR)

Syracuse is the recommended airport for arrival. Besides the usual online ticket sources, please check out www.jetblue.com, www.transmeridian-airlines.com and www.flyi.com which offer cheap flights from many major airports. This airport has extensive car rental options and a bus connection to Potsdam. If you rent a car, take Interstate 81 north to exit 48 (Route 342) north of Watertown. Go right (east) at the exit. Route 342 east intersects with U.S. Route 11 (left turn at a traffic light). Follow U.S. Route 11 north (east) to Potsdam. Driving time from Syracuse: approximately 2.5 hours.

(If you use "Enterprise Rent a Car" (315) 454-8400, mention Clarkson University corporate discount number P87592.)

The bus schedules can be checked at www.greyhound.com and usually change somewhat in late Spring. The bus stops at the airport about 15 mins. after leaving the central bus station in Syracuse. You can ask the driver to be let out at one of the entrances to the Clarkson University Hill Campus or disembark at the central bus stop in Potsdam. You can see these details by clicking the schedule number for travel from Syracuse to Potsdam at the Greyhound site. We will offer pickups at the central stop. Bus tickets can be purchased from the driver. The airport bus stop is at the far left of the terminal, when you walk out of the building; this is the US Air side of the terminal building. (The bus has no food or drink available, so you may wish to bring your own.)There is a hotel right at the airport: Airport Inn, phone (315) 455-7362. It is very close to the terminal and offers shuttle pickup that operates until approximately 11:30 pm (call on a courtesy phone). The airport food services close in mid evening, but the hotel has a restaurant that is open until 10 pm. Finally, please note that Syracuse also has train and bus connections from all the major east coast cities.

SMALL REGIONAL AIRPORTS

One can also use the nearby small airports in Massena (MSS, 20 miles away), Ogdensburg (OGS, 30 miles), Saranac Lake/Lake Placid (SLK, 60 miles), and Watertown (ART, 70 miles). They are more expensive but have taxi connections to Potsdam. The taxi must be pre-booked and can be quite costly. There are limited car rental services: please ask us for driving directions by e-mail, if you plan to arrive there.

TRAVEL VIA CANADA

Travel via Canada (we are 20 miles from the border) has the advantage of two major airports 1.5 hours away: Ottawa (YOW) and Montreal/ Trudeau (YUL). Furthermore, there is regular train service with ViaRail 1 (888) VIA RAIL or 1 (514) 842-7245 to Cornwall, Ontario, which is 30 miles away, including trains from Montreal. Drawbacks include the need to cross the border (carry appropriate documents) and the difficulty in finding a taxi, unless pre-booked, willing to cross the border (taxi drivers just don't ordinarily carry their passports!). Also, it is advisable to carry some Canadian currency for minor expenses.

Potsdam Taxi (315) 265-7506

Car rentals are abundant at both airports. (If you use "Enterprise Rent a Car," Montreal: (514) 737-9292, Ottawa: (613) 596-2255, mention Clarkson University corporate discount number P87592.) Here are some travel directions:

From Dorval, take Route 20 west (ouest) which merges with Route 401 west (ouest). At Cornwall take exit 789 marked "Bridge to USA" ; turn left at the top of the ramp and follow signs to the bridge. Follow Route 37 south to Massena and then take Route 56 south to Potsdam for about 18 miles. Arrival in Potsdam will be apparent by the appearance of two small malls on each side of Route 56 which turns into Market Street. Go all the way to the end of Market (about 2 miles from these malls), at the light turn right on to Maple street. At the next light turn left on to Clarkson Avenue, at the top of the hill turn right into the campus. Turn left at the stop sign. Follow this road past several buildings. The Camp building is a large brick building with a green roof on the right. Just past it to the right is the parking lot for visitors.
(Note: When you drive back to the Montreal Trudeau Airport, the road right before the airport, involves several turns that are easy to miss because of numerous lane shifts, even though they are all well marked. Therefore, it is useful to have a detailed map of the airport area. You might want to get a map from yahoo.com, which can be printed from the Web site, before your departure.

From Ottawa, turn left on Hunt Club Road; follow it to Route 16, and then turn left and proceed south on Route 16. Turn right turn at the traffic light marked "to Route 416". Go about one mile and take a second right down the ramp and onto Route 416 south. Continue on Route 416 to the exit marked "Bridge to USA". Once across the border, turn right on Route 37 south and then left on Route 68 south. In Canton, pick up Route 11 north (east) to Potsdam for about 10 miles. There will be a small overpass, the road turns into two lanes and the speed limit will change to 30 mph. The first entrance to Clarkson will be almost immediately on your right after you go down the overpass. Follow this road past a first set of parking lots with a large building on a hill to the left. Continue until you arrive to the next set of parking lots. Take the second left into the parking lot for visitors for the CAMP building. The building is a large brick building with a green roof.
(Note: Route 416 is a major road leaving Ottawa going south on the west side of the city. If you miss any of the above twists and turns, any reasonable map of the area can be used to get on 416, which is difficult to avoid going west from the airport.)

ARRIVAL BY CAR

Travel time from NYC is 7.5 hours, from Boston, 6 hours, and from Albany, 3.5 hours. The road takes you through the Adirondacks, the largest natural park in North America, and offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the eastern US. We will provide travel pointers by e-mail, if requested; any map of NY State (and Vermont, if traveling from Boston) will suffice. When arriving from Boston, please be advised that despite large signs on the interstate, there is no regular ferry service from Burlington, VT, to NY State. This service is now available a couple of exits north of Burlington (follow signs and ask us for details).
