State Your Belief in Higher Education
Now might be the opportune moment to define important causes in your life, and begin to craft a philanthropic plan that reflects your values. For example, do you feel that higher education is critical to the future of our society? Do you wish to say "thank you" for how Clarkson prepared you to meet the diverse challenges that lie ahead?
Stephen Oakes ’04 started his philanthropic vision and planning even before commencement. As an undergraduate, Stephen launched a project to create an endowed fund for the Clarkson chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi, a national business fraternity. Stephen continued his support after graduation as a statement of the importance of higher education and to set an example for others to follow.
Right now, you might consider the size of your gift to be modest, but the impact of your intention is enormous. Even at this age, there are steps you can take to define the values of your existence, and how you wish to make a difference in the lives of others:
A good habit– Become an annual Clarkson Fund donor. Gifts of all sizes help Clarkson provide a quality education to students each year. And it’s easy to make a gift online.
A gift of time– Become a student mentor, network with your regional alumni chapter, help recruit new students. Your time is valuable to Clarkson; become a volunteer and help students access a higher education.
A small percentage - Name Clarkson as a percentage beneficiary of your retirement plan. Even a small percentage will make a difference for some future student.
A smart choice - Do you have a life insurance policy from childhood, or coverage from your employer? Naming Clarkson as a percentage beneficiary on a life insurance policy is a statement of the importance of higher education.
A simple gift - A bequest to Clarkson in your will may name a specific dollar amount, a percentage, or the remainder of your estate. The size is not important; making a statement about the value of higher education is.
