The Clarkson Student Chapter of SIAM (the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) was launched this year. The SIAM chapter brings together both undergraduate and graduate students as well as students from other departments.
Applied Mathematics and Statistics
Mathematics means a lot more than just numbers. Math is concepts, creativity, invention and solutions. It is the purest of all sciences — and the most widely applied. Look at any aspect of technology, science, modern business methods, or medicine and you will see the importance of mathematics. Clarkson emphasizes the problem-solving nature of mathematics; learning applied concepts you can put to work by solving computational or engineering problems. Every field of science, engineering, technology and business requires the talents of a professional with exceptional quantitative problem-solving abilities.
Clarkson offers an undergraduate curriculum in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, as well as graduate degrees in Mathematics.
Actuarial Mathematics
Did you know that "actuary" is the number-two ranked career in The Jobs Rated Almanac? An actuary uses probability and statistical theory to evaluate future probabilities and their impact on insurance companies and financial institutions, and on population studies and many related decisions. Numerous businesses require the services of an expert in actuarial mathematics. Your professors will help you prepare for the actuarial exams and the Mathematics Department will even pay your first exam fee! Actuarial mathematics has a major component of statistics. The Applied Mathematics and Statistics major is a good preparation for such a career.
