Computer Science

Computer Science is the study of computer systems and computing. It opens the door to all the wonders and uses of computing today. Computer scientists design computers and the software that runs them, develop information technologies, and develop and adapt principles for applying computers to new uses. In industry, computer scientists may design and develop computer software, programming tools, programming languages, new information technologies, or even computer games. In academic institutions, they work in areas ranging from hardware to artificial intelligence, robotics and computational complexity theory.

Clarkson combines two distinctive strengths that benefit students: personalized teaching and high-powered research. As a small, undergraduate-centered university, our professors get to know students as individuals. They also conduct world-class research in areas of vital importance — and involve undergraduates in the process.

In addition to the bachelor of science degree, Clarkson also offers a master of science degree in computer science.

A Curriculum Focused on Results

At Clarkson, you learn how computer software and hardware systems work, not just how to use them. You learn programming as a tool, not as an end in itself. You learn programming paradigms, so you can move from one language to the next quickly and easily. By graduation, you will measure your success not by how much you know and can do, but by how well-prepared you are for continuous learning in the future.

The flexibility of the curriculum allows you to pursue special interests and master highly marketable skills in areas including software systems, hardware development, scientific applications, information systems, management systems, and network administration. At Clarkson, you'll find computer labs for Windows and Unix systems with access to Matlab, Maple and numerous other mathematics and computer science software applications. There are also four dedicated computer science labs:
  • Virtual Reality Discovery Lab
  • Internet Teaching Lab
  • Clarkson Open Source Institute
  • Operating Systems Research Lab

At Clarkson, we believe that teamwork is the key to success. In addition to getting involved in academic projects such as the FIRST Robotics Team, you can also benefit from working with your peers in extracurricular groups such as the Association for Computer Machinery, a national professional organization for computer scientists. Our active local chapter has won several programming contests, including the ACM Northeast Regional.
